An epic tale told in three generations
— Written by, Nathan Alan Davis

Late at night, deep in the woods of southern Illinois, a ghost tells Gail she will die within the next 24 hours. So begins The Refuge Plays, an epic tale that follows one Black family over 70 years. For the first time ever, Roundabout Theatre Company and New York Theatre Workshop are teaming up to bring this remarkable world premiere to life. Written by Nathan Alan Davis and directed by Patricia McGregor, Artistic Director of NYTW, this bold reimagining of an American “family play” is filled with humor, heart and even some surprises.

MICHAEL OLATUJA:

LAGOS PEPPER SOUP AT JOE’S PUB WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27th

What you hear is a blend of three major cities: it’s a celebration of life, and I wanted to make it sound like a soundtrack for a movie that hasn’t been made yet - maybe the next Black Panther movie.
— Michael Olatuja shares in regards to his latest album, “Lagos Pepper Soup”

In partnership with Joe’s Pub, The Culture LP is excited to further our mission of creating an ecosystem that drives and provides cultural connections amongst Black and Brown people.

Bassist Michael Olatuja performs music from his release of Lagos Pepper Soup: his innovative blend of West African Afrobeats and jazz in what he himself describes as a “cinematic Afrobeat.” Backed by a string orchestra and arranged by iconic film music arranger iconic film music arranger Dave Metzger, the top orchestrator for Disney, the production features an All-Star cast such as Angélique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves, Brandee Younger, Lionel Loueke, Regina Carter, Joe Lovano, Laura Mvula, Gregoire Maret, and Becca Stevens.

Having worked and recorded with the likes of Diana Ross, Spike Lee, Phil Collins, Shakira, and other iconic artists of our generation, it is without question that Olatuja is one of the most inventive and in-demand musicians of our time. Olatuja’s new, twelve-track CD, Lagos Pepper Soup, named after a zesty, West African meal, with lyrics mostly in Yoruba and English, and recorded in London and New York, is his most dynamic and captivating album to date.
