Looking Back at The Culture LP's 10 Year Celebration: Juneteenth 2022

ON JUNE 19, 2022 OUR TEAM CELEBRATED TEN YEARS OF UPLIFTING THE GLOBAL MAJORITY THROUGH THE POWER OF THE ARTS AT THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM.

To commemorate the moment and honor Juneteenth, The Culture LP partnered with the Brooklyn Museum to program an afternoon full of activities celebrating self-expression, community, and Black liberation.

HOW WE STARTED THE CELEBRATION:

At the beginning of this magical day, we had to make sure everyone could tap in and had the opportunity to still their minds and open their hearts. Each of us has countless obstacles that we face in our daily. These obstacles and challenges can prevent us from feeling whole or free. What we face as individuals coupled with the collective stresses and shifts we are moving through is unfortunately the perfect recipe for anxiety, depression, irritability, and grief. To offset these truths it is important for us to go inward, connect with our breath, and be conscious of our thoughts.

To commemorate Juneteenth and also acknowledge Father’s Day, Steven Rousseau & Maya Eberhart* led an intimate group through an immersive introduction to Kemetic meditation and breathwork. Folks left feeling lighter in their minds, body, and spirit as they continued their days. Whether they made their way to Fort Greene Park for the Layout, Weeksville Heritage Center, or remained with us for the rest of the day at the Brooklyn Museum, our Kemetic Meditation for Liberation was an ideal way to set the tone.

*Please note, that both certified practitioners offer classes locally and virtually should you be interested in working with them on movement and mindfulness sessions in the future.

SELF-EXPRESSION AT ITS FINEST:

Following the meditation, guests were ushered into the beautiful Beaux-Arts Court to enjoy an intimate performance of poetry, movement and sound curated by our partners at The Breathing Space. Things started off with the sounds of trombonist, Jovan Johnson as folks got seated and the artists were introduced. Artist and founder of The Breathing Space, Leeza Joneé recited five original poems and interludes. Her words sparred gracefully with Johnson’s soulful notes, as the limbs of Catherine Kirk encircled the crowd. The full performance is available for your viewing enjoyment below and via Vimeo.

AFTER THE SHOW IS THE AFTER PARTY:

As much as we love to indulge in the arts and honor our hearts, sometimes the best medicine is indeed some uninhibited movement. To close out the afternoon, master of ceremonies, Craig James, and the minister of sound herself, Classic New Wave, took us on a musical journey like no other. We laughed, we ate, we danced, drank, and sang our hearts out.
